Common reasons why couples file for divorce in Texas

On Behalf of | Aug 18, 2023 | Family Law

Approximately half the people that get married in Texas end up dissolving their union, mostly under no-fault grounds. However, this doesn’t mean they naturally fell out of love and wanted to part ways. Usually, a few common issues strain the marriage, driving them to file for divorce, including careers, parenting differences and household labor disputes.

Career choices

According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 46% of marriage conflicts stem from differences in career choices. Military personnel, logisticians, automotive services mechanics and engineers and healthcare personnel are among the professions that often demand long working hours that don’t allow spouses to spend as much quality time together. As a result, they may end up feeling like their relationship is more of a roommate situation than an intimate union.

Parenting differences

Spouses may struggle to agree on what constitutes a good parenting style, even if they love their children unconditionally. Disagreements on physical punishment, boundaries, and routines can increase the likelihood of divorce by up to 43%.

Division of household labor

In some couples, one spouse may feel like they are shouldering most of the responsibility for running the household. This strain could be due to cultural or family expectations, with one partner feeling like their contributions aren’t valued or appreciated enough by their spouse. Studies show that married women with children that took on a large portion of housework reported having less sexual desire for their partners. An astounding 63% believed that a better understanding of shared responsibility would have improved their marriage.

Marriage is a momentous choice that can bring immense love, happiness, and a lifelong bond between two individuals. It is a decision that requires careful consideration and thought, but can ultimately lead to a fulfilling and joyful life together. However, couples must make an effort to understand the issues that arise throughout their marriage and address them before things get out of hand. The best suggestion for improving a marriage is to improve communication between partners.
